Yoga Mats
In order for yoga mats to be most effective, they need
to be in good shape. If they are not used how they were intended to
be used, injuries could occur. This is especially true for those types
of yoga that require more movement and physical ability.
The best yoga mats should be:
• Flat – After using yoga mats for a time, they may not
stay as flat as they once were when they were first purchased. If you
notice the mat beginning to warp in some areas or be in a condition
that is not completely flat, this may mean it is time to purchase a
new mat. If a mat is exposed to heat for a long period of time, the
possibility of it warping out a little increases.
• Firm, yet comfortable – Yoga mats are built to give comfort
and a certain level of softness, but they also need to be firm. As time
goes on, these mats have a tendency to lose firmness. A mat that is
too soft could make doing the proper yoga techniques a little difficult.
Holding a pose on one foot, for example, could be difficult because
it is harder to keep one's balance while standing on a soft surface.
By ensuring that your yoga mats are retaining their flatness and firmness,
you are more likely to have a positive yoga experience. It is also wise
to make sure the mats stay "sticky" if you are using sticky
mats to do your yoga on.
