Yoga Styles

You may want to choose one of the following yoga styles to focus on if you are interested in making a habit out of doing yoga, but it is important to remember that you do not have to simply stick with one style. Trying a variety is a good idea.

• Ananda – Ananda is one of the yoga styles that uses asana and pranyama in order to help awaken and energize the subtleties within oneself. The object of this kind of yoga is to harmonize a person’s body, mind and emotions. This is a good type of yoga to perform to relieve stress and tension.

• Anusara – Abusara means “to step into the current of divine will.” Anasura yoga can best be described as one of the yoga styles that is heart-oriented and spiritually inspiring. It is also grounded in a knowledge of outer and inner body alignment. This is a kind of yoga that respects the various abilities and limitations of a person. It will push you as far as you are comfortable going, but also not force you out of your comfort zone.

• Bikram – Bikram yoga is going to make you sweat. Literally. If you take part in this style of yoga, you need to be prepared to feel the heat. In a Bikram yoga class, the thermostat is set to high. The actual temperature is usually about 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Then a series of about two dozen asanas are performed to warm and stretch the muscles. This is one of the yoga styles that take a lot of commitment thanks to the fact that being in such heat for several minutes can be uncomfortable.
